Omega C760 Enlarger
Technical Memo

Avoiding damage to the foam light seal

C760 lamphouses were fitted with a foam light seal intended to eliminate light leaks between the lamphouse and negative carrier.  Because the lamphouse is fixed in position and does not raise and lower onto the negative carrier, inserting the carrier can easily damage these seals.

To minimize damage to the gasket, we recommend the following procedure to augment the directions for assembly and alignment in the C760 Instruction Manual:

  1. Loosen off the four knurled thumbscrews used to secure and align the lamphouse about one turn each.

  2. Lift the lamphouse up and off the enlarger chassis by disengaging the grooved glides on the rear of the lamphouse from the keyhole slots.

  3. Place a negative carrier on the spring-loaded negative stage.

  4. Re-install the lamphouse on top of the negative carrier without compressing the spring-loaded negative stage

  5. While lightly pressing down on the lamphouse, tighten the four knurled thumbscrews equally (about one turn, as loosened above) such that they hold the lamphouse securely in place.

  6. Perform the alignment procedure outlined in the Instruction Manual.

  7. After alignment, remove the negative carrier and note the space between the bottom of the lamphouse and the spring-loaded negative stage.  These two parts should be separated by a distance just slightly less than the thickness of the negative carrier (about 3mm or 1/8")

  8. If the space is much less than the thickness of the carrier, repeat steps 1 to 7 until the correct distance has been achieved.

To further lessen wear and tear on the gasket, insert negative carriers at a slight downward angle, applying light pressure against the spring-loaded platform.

Carefully following the above instructions will greatly increase the life of the foam seal and should make the C760 Enlarger more enjoyable to use, as the carriers will now slide in and out with little resistance.
