The B-7 represented a major upgrade compared to the B-5, involving not only
switching to the dual rail chassis, but the autofocus system was also revised.
It amounted to a medium format version of the D-3, with similar geared
elevation system, autofocus tracks, and lens mount system.
Like the D-3 and other Omega autofocus enlargers, the B-7's autofocus tracks were custom profiled to match the characteristics of individual lens and lens mount combinations, and an uncalibrated track was required for manual focusing. Due to the autofocus mechanism, the B-7 was only offered with the standard length column. Most accessories were the same as for the B-8. The condenser lamphouse was the same as the B-8, and similarly the only colorheads ever sold to fit it were the early Chromega B, Chromega B Halogen, and Super Chromega B lamphouse, which covered only up to 6x7cm. There were no adapters to allow fitting of the later dichroic heads The B-7 had an exceptional production run of 18 years, but finally the decline in popularity of both the 6x9cm format and autofocus enlargers spelled the end in 1973, and the model was not replaced. Used Advice: As with the other autofocus enlargers, check how well that the autofocus tracks, lensmounts and negative carriers that come with the unit will meet your requirements, as these items can add greatly to the cost if purchased separately. Units fitted with the Chromega lamphouses are usually not worth considering. |
